Will it work on iPhone plane mode?

I use Smart transit here in Washington DC but it is so SLOW..tapping takes maybe 1 sec before it registers and procceses it. Absolutely blew my mind when I visted Tokyo experienced how fast it was there when I tapped my Suica card loaded on my phone!

5 rapid beeps with flashing red lights means the gate could not read the Suica card or Mobile Suica device, you need to back up and tap again. Rare but it does happen occasionally. In this case the gate attempted 2 reads is quick succession, hence 2 sets of 5 rapid beeps.

When the Suica audio guidance turned on and the card balance drops below ¥1,000, the gate or store reader beeps 3 times, instead of the normal 2 beep, to alert you that it’s time to recharge your Suica balance. Mobile Suica users can ask station gate staff to enable the setting by placing your device on the reader. The Japanese name for the setting is 音声案内 “onsei annai”.

Jan 6th, 2020 - I encountered the 3rd error preventing me from exiting the Shibuya station with iPhone X. (Latest iOS as of now). To be fair it worked about 10 times before my first error. The phone had the spinning doughnut when scanning the iPhone. I think it was trying to compute the fare. I had to rescan 6 times during busy rush hour to finally get out. I thought it didn’t need network and was immune from network latency. But I’m questioning this factoid. It also might explain why almost no one is using their iPhone Suica here. It’s horrible when it craps out with 100 people shoving you forward at the gate during rush hour. The physical card never failed in the past 10 years.
